Fire claims life of retired Kenner firefighter

INDEPENDENCE, LA (WAFB) -

A 79-year-old retired Kenner Firefighter died in a house fire around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.

A passing motorist noticed the fire and called firefighters. The fire was in the 15000 block of Toney Road in Independence, LA.

When firefighters arrived to the house, it was engulfed in flames. Officials say the entire house was destroyed.

When the fire was extinguished, investigators found the body of George D. Shilling inside his bedroom. Preliminary autopsy results reveal the cause of death to be asphyxia due to smoke inhalation.

Investigators are working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
