BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Fire officials are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a home Wednesday night.

It happened at a home on Kentucky Street in Baton Rouge around 11:15 p.m.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported the back of the home was engulfed in flames when crews made it to the scene.

"Our investigators were called out and through witness interviews and other evidence at the scene, there is some suspicion there," said Curt Monte, spokesperson for BRFD. "They're following up on that as we speak and they'll stay on it until they can nail down a determination."

The four people inside the house at the time of the fire made it out safely.

Investigators said they think the fire started in or near the wash room. They added half of the home burned before the fire was put out.

The rest of the home had heat and smoke damage. The home is considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Red Cross was called to help the family.
