Icy weather freezes more than roadways in some parts

ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

Many people throughout south Louisiana were home after being warned to stay off the dangerous roadways, but some people in West Feliciana Parish still had to get to work and the ice caused more than just trouble on the highways.

Just about every business in St. Francisville was closed due to the weather. Tip Pace normally sells seafood but the profits on Tuesday were about as frozen as the ground outside.

"They basically closed off all the roads, which has closed off all the business," Pace said.

His kitchen remained open throughout the day, but only because he was tasked with feeding hundreds of people stuck at a nearby paper mill.

"The paper mill has asked us to come feed the employees. They have about 300 employees that they're going to have to keep at the mill," he explained.

There were a couple of accidents in the area, but West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Austin Daniel said for the most part drivers listened to warnings to stay off the road. He asked people to do the same as the wintry mix was forecast to freeze overnight.

"We've got deputies out riding," Daniel said. "We know that the conditions are deteriorating."

Pace is ready to see sunny skies and better profits again soon, but is thankful he'll be able to salvage some money on the second 'snow day' of 2014.

"It's really nice to have the catering come along and pick up some of that slack. It will help the bottom line," he added.

Some nearby parishes called for curfews Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but West Feliciana was not one of those.
