BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Tomorrow will mark one week since the first of four home invasions and sexual assaults in Baton Rouge. While police have not officially linked the crimes, the city's police force advises that everyone stay vigilant, especially women.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported that they have increased patrols in several areas. Three of the incidents involved elderly women who were attacked in the middle of the night. That is why authorities urge homeowners to check their doors and windows to make sure they are locked. Also, make sure alarms and flood lights are working.

LSU Criminologist Ed Shihadeh said while there is no reason to panic, cases like these must be watched very closely.

"Violent sex offenders tend to escalate their crimes. There may not be extreme violence with these crimes," said Shihadeh, "but we don't know that a few weeks from now, a month from now."

Shihadeh said offenders can become more confident and can commit more crimes if not caught.

"They tend to get emboldened and then they tend to increase the frequency, so yeah it's important to get this guy," Shihadeh explained.

The victims have all described their attacker as a man about 6 feet tall, wearing a mask and gloves. No other details of the description are available, but 9News will keep you updated of any new developments.
