SORRENTO, LA (WAFB) - The Sorrento Police Chief says he's got an insurance quote that would bring back the department and its officers.
Chief Earl Theriot said he hand delivered the proposal to town council members and the mayor. He says a company called Indian Harbor Insurance quoted him a price just under $35,000 a year.
It would include coverage similar to what the department got under its previous insurer Risk Management. Theroit says he wants the council to review the new plan before Tuesday's Council meeting so they can make a decision on the town's law enforcement once and for all.
In the meantime, the chief says he will continue patrolling the town during the day. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office patrols at night.
Sorrento Mayor Mike Lambert says four out of five councilmen signed a letter Monday asking Police Chief Earl Theriot to resign.
Lambert said, "He put the town in a bad spot. His leadership, operation of the department has gotten us to this point, and it is the prudent thing to do." Councilman Randy Anny did not sign the letter calling for Chief Theriot's resignation.
Theriot said he is not resigning and will continue to patrol from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. because the citizens need law enforcement around the clock.
Right now Sorrento PD has no liability insurance. If Chief Earl Theriot or his assistant chief, Ricky Smith, get injured they have workman's comp, according to the mayor.
Police Chief Earl Theriot said he is patrolling because the town is not safe. He said if something were to happen, the liability would fall on the town because they are still without insurance.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office agreed last week to continue to provide protection in the town, but with a gap in patrols from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
The Sorrento Police Department lost insurance coverage in November.
The contract approved between the Sorrento Town Council and Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office includes coverage in the town through March.
Mayor Mike Lambert said he estimates if the coverage is extended to the end of the fiscal year, it will cost the town about $115,000.
