FORT WRIGHT, KY (FOX19) -

A Fort Wright soldier is shot and killed in the line of duty. Daniel Tyler Lee, 28, was deployed in September. It was his first tour with the Army Special Forces.

Sgt. Lee was killed Tuesday night in Afghanistan. His family first heard the news early Wednesday morning.

"As I sat in the driveway, I knew that I was the one. I needed to be there to talk to my parents," says Jamie Hahn, Danny's sister.

Hahn says something about this week just didn't feel right.

"I knew that something was wrong only because my brother and I had a very unusual bond, and I could feel it for the last couple days," says Jamie.

But this afternoon was about remembering the life of Sgt. Lee, better known by his family as Danny.

"He worked hard to get where he was, I just didn't think his life would end so soon," says Fran Lee, Danny's mother.

"He was a one-in-a-million, the best solider," adds Jamie.

Sgt. Lee graduated from Dixie Heights High School in 2003. He joined the Army at the age of 24 and he and his family discussed the potential risks.

His mother Fran says she wasn't too happy at the time, but she quickly understood this is what Danny wanted to do.

"Being the mother of a soldier is just -- every night when I went to bed I thought about it," explains Fran.

Sgt. Lee rose fast. He served in Iraq on his first tour, and eventually, earned his Green Beret as part of the elite Army Special Forces unit.

"The way we communicated with him in the last month was probably as happy as I've seen him," says Danny's father Daniel.

"When he did all his special forces training, we were just beyond proud," explains Jamie.

Sgt. Lee leaves behind his wife and six-month-old boy, but this Fort Wright kid left a legacy that's made an entire city proud.

"He was my buddy and my baby and I'm really going to miss him," says Fran.

Army officials say Sgt. Lee's body is expected back in the states by Friday. The funeral will be held in Kentucky. No word yet on when that will be.

An army official tells FOX19 that besides a gunshot wound, they don't have many details on what led to Sgt. Lee's death. His family will be awarded a Purple Heart.
