ST. JAMES, LA (WAFB) - Authorities have released the names of the suspected shooter and the victim who was shot multiple times in the parking lot of St. James High School during a basketball game.

The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office said the shooting happened in front of St. James High around 8:40 p.m., as a basketball game was taking place in the gym.

Officials with the Sheriff's Office believe Kylin Elder, 17, opened fire in the parking lot and shot 19-year-old Cowan Franklin multiple times.

Investigators said the Franklin was taken to University Hospital in New Orleans where he is in stable condition.

Detectives say the shooting is the result of an argument between Elder and Franklin that happened earlier in the day.

Elder is charged with attempted second degree murder, possession of a firearm on school property, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon. He is being held in the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office awaiting bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
