Schooner restaurant brings taste of old Biloxi to D'Iberville

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

The Ole Biloxi Schooner restaurant has set sail on a new adventure. The popular seafood restaurant just opened a second location north of Biloxi's Back Bay. The owner talks about bringing the taste of old Biloxi to D'Iberville.

Piping hot gumbo, old-style po'boys and seafood platters are just some of the favorites from the Ole Biloxi Schooner in downtown Biloxi that can now be found in D'Iberville.

Schooner North officially opened at the corner of Highway 15 and Lamey Bridge Road Friday. The building used to be Famous Joe's Oyster Bar. Owners Joe and Charmaine Lancon decided to reopen the place featuring the Schooner name.

"I feel excited. D'Iberville took us in," said restaurant owner Joe Lancon.

"They recently annexed this area. They took in a good part of this area, plus, a lot of houses are being built out this way and it just seemed a right time."

"This has been something historically we've grown up on. The food is delicious," said D'Iberville City Manager Bobby Eleuterius.

"We still go to the Schooner in Biloxi to eat. Now we have it on this side of the Bay and we're very pleased that the Lancon family would bring that to us."

Schooner North actually puts three restaurants under one roof. Along with the Schooner menu, you can find dishes from two other restaurants the Lancons' once owned: Famous Joes and Fisherman's Harbor.

"I'm ecstatic! I've missed Famous Joes since it closed, the grilled oysters, and to have Schooner and Famous Joe under the same roof, close to my house is wonderful. I'm very happy," said Sharon Pelaez of Biloxi.

Now that the Schooner has dropped anchor in D'Iberville, the Lancons hope it will become a new tradition for families north of the Bay.

For now, Schooner North is only open for dinner.

Here's an interesting note. The restaurant opened on January 2. That's Joe Lancon's birthday. January 2 was also the date the original Schooner restaurant opened at Biloxi's Point Cadet back in 1983.
