Vandy football to hold team meeting Saturday morning

A team meeting for Vanderbilt's football team has been called for 8 a.m. Saturday at McGugin Center where football coach James Franklin is expected to announce his future.

Franklin is the front-runner for the vacant head coach position at Penn State, which has announced there will be a major announcement Saturday afternoon involving the president and athletic director.

Vanderbilt fans have tweeted they were going to be at McGugin Center prior to the meeting to create a "Star Walk" for the team members to show them support. Fans line the walk between McGugin Center and Vanderbilt Stadium prior to football games to form a corridor for the players to walk between.

It has been reported that Franklin will be named the 16th Penn State football coach at the 4:15 p.m. ET press conference.

Franklin met Friday afternoon with Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams and Vanderbilt Board of Trustee member John Ingram at Franklin's Green Hills' home.

ESPN reported that Franklin will receive a contract from Penn State worth up to $4.5 million a year, ranking him the second-highest paid Big 10 coach behind Ohio State's Urban Meyer. ESPN reported that Franklin makes about $3 million at Vanderbilt, which doesn't have to disclose salaries since it is a private university.

Penn State tweeted Friday afternoon that the press conference, scheduled to begin after the Nittany Lions' 1 p.m. basketball game against Indiana, would include university president Rodney Erickson and athletic director Dave Joyner.

Penn State officials are set to approve the contract for a new football coach on Saturday morning.

Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin is considered the front-runner for the position to succeed Bill O'Brien, who left to coach the NFL's Houston Texans.
