TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

An investigation is underway into allegations of animal abuse involving dogs left out in the extreme cold. One of them didn't survive.

Disturbing pictures of two malnourished Boxers in Tangipahoa Parish appeared on Facebook. The dogs were in such bad shape the outlines of their bones can be seen through the skin. The black one died. Animal investigators believe he was left outside in the intense cold that recently hit the area.

"It breaks my heart," said Tari Trosclair. "I have four Boxers."

Trosclair is an animal lover and couldn't picture how a dog owner could allow this to happen.

"It is really sad. That all you have to do is give them proper food and shelter and they can be taken care of and be healthy. They don't have to suffer that way," she explained.

The owner of the dogs couldn't be found. The brown Boxer was taken to Tangipahoa Parish Animal Control and looks better now than in the picture of it that first appeared on social media.

Director Chip Fitz said animal control is investigating and charges could be filed.

"There could be, but that is still yet to be determined when we find out just what happened," said Fitz. "To be perfectly honest, on the surface there looks like there could be, but we don't make that determination until we have all the facts and statements in place."

Trosclair said if you see an animal being abused, call animal control or authorities.

"If you see something, you need to report it. Just posting a picture on Facebook, and it does bring awareness, but it doesn't help those animals that are already dead," she added.

The organization that helps Boxers is called Louisiana Boxer Rescue. It is planning on getting the brown Boxer from animal control.
