‘Notice of Appearance in Court' email is a scam, do not open

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

If you've received an email stating that you are supposed to appear to court, delete it. Officials warn this is the latest attempt to download a harmful virus onto your computer.

The Louisiana Attorney General's Public Protection Division has fielded about 20 calls and emails from consumers this week. They say the subject line of the email says "Notice of Appearance in Court."

"It is purportedly sent from a ‘court clerk' instructing recipients to appear for ‘illegal software usage,'" Sanettria "Sam" Pleasant, head of Attorney General's Public Protection Division, explained. "The emails deceptively impersonate the domain name of several well-known law firms and contain an attachment, purportedly a copy of the court notice, which may link to a computer virus."

The email instructs the recipient to bring documentation on a listed date. The Attorney General's Office has confirmed that the emails did not originate from the law firms mentioned.

If you receive one of these emails, you should "ignore and delete them."

To report a scam or file a complaint, please contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-351-4889 or online at www.agbuddycaldwell.com.
