KSLA News 12 Editorial: Jan. 9th-Credit Cards

Posted: Updated:

My wife is among an estimated 40 million credit card users nationwide who fell victim to a massive security breach at Target stores.

The bad guys got our names, card numbers, expiration dates and even the little three-digit security code on the back. It may have happened to you as well. But before you beat Target up too badly, remember that every American carrying a credit or debit card is a sitting duck for fraud.

That's because the cards we all carry have magnetic stripes, an antiquated technology. Most other nations use encrypted chips.

The credit card industry hasn't upgraded our cards because they've been more focused on pumping their bottom lines than protecting their customers.

It's time for that to change. We call on our own congressional delegation to take the lead in demanding immediate changes to the credit and debit cards we all carry. The Target incident should be a wake-up call. All mag-stripe cards should be replaced with chip cards before we see another massive theft of our information.

I'm James Smith.
