Possible cheating scandal brewing in EBR Parish School System

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

State Education Superintendent John White confirmed late Wednesday his department is looking into possible cheating within the East Baton Rouge Parish public school system.

"We have received some indication there may be a discrepancy on some academic records in East Baton Rouge Parish," White said in a statement. "We're going to be looking into the situation."

The Times-Picayune newspaper's website, NOLA.COM, published a lengthy article on the possible cheating scandal. NOLA.COM quoted a source saying the state Department of Education will announce Thursday that it is auditing the EBR School System following "allegations that students were allowed to cheat in online courses and graduate without meeting requirements."

NOLA.com reported their staff has received documentation from a whistle blower in the school district, which describes lax oversight and district policies not being followed when students take online courses. Among the allegations are students taking tests at times outside of school hours, a student being allowed to graduate despite having been caught cheating on a math graduation exit exam, and students using the online search engine Google to get answers to test questions.

EBR school spokesman Keith Bromery told WAFB 9NEWS by phone that he did not yet have enough information to comment on the matter.

Tarvald Smith, Vice President of the EBR Parish School Board, said by phone Wednesday evening that he was just hearing of the allegations and had no concrete information. "But I plan to be in the (district) superintendent's office first thing in the morning to ask questions," Smith said.
