INDEPENDENCE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Police say just after 6 p.m. Tuesday a 76-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle in St. Helena Parish.
Troopers say 76-year-old Joe Freeman of Independence was standing in front of his home on the edge of the southbound lane of LA 43 when he bent over to pick up an unknown object. He reportedly lost his balance and stumbled into the road into the path of an oncoming car.
Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Troopers say Freeman was wearing dark clothing at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation. No charges are pending at this time.
Troopers urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on or near area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of travel lanes at all times.
