BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The American Red Cross's South Mississippi chapter is extending a helping hand to coast veterans. The organization conducted its first job fair and resource workshop Tuesday to help transition military men and women to civilian jobs.

Almost 70 people visited the job fair, gathering advice and guidance in their search for work. The veterans attending said that the event was very informative and helped them make the leap into the civilian sector.

"I think this is very beneficial for us veterans in the public to heighten the awareness of things that are going on in our communities and the assistance and help that's available," said Alex Stallworth, a Biloxi veteran.

Jay Huffstatler, the South Mississippi Chapter Executive, believes in giving back to the men and women who served.

"This is just one small way that we can work with local veterans to make sure that we can give back to them for what they've given to us," Huffstatler said.

Veteran Employment Coordinator Crystal Jones organized the event. She hopes to make this job fair a quarterly event. She also hopes that more businesses will jump on board and be willing to come advertise and network with the veterans in the future.

The job fair was a result of a partnership between the American Red Cross, Beau Rivage and MGM Resorts. In September, MGM Resorts donated a grant for the creation of organizations that would help veterans enter the work force. Because of the Beau Rivage being in Biloxi, the South Mississippi chapter of the Red Cross was one of five locations nationally to receive a part of the $250,000 donated by MGM Resorts.
