Outages leave thousands without power on freezing morning

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Thousands of customers with DEMCO and Entergy in East Baton Rouge Parish were without power on a morning when temperatures were below freezing.

According to the companies' websites, about 5,500 customers with each in the parish were without electricity around 8 a.m.

The cause of the outages is unknown, however, DEMCO released a statement late Monday saying that Entergy was having issues with transmission. Entergy is DEMCO's transmission provider. All power was restored by 9:30 a.m., according to DEMCO.

At 8 a.m., it was 26 degrees in Baton Rouge, but felt like 14 due to the wind chill.

Runnels School (South Harrells Ferry Road Campus) announced it is closed Monday due to power-related issues. The Jefferson Highway campus remains open.

The outages caused other problems such as non-working traffic signals at intersections causing major backups in some areas.

Airline Highway South was backed up from Old Hammond Highway to Coursey Boulevard due to light signals being out on Airline at Coursey.
