PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

A 2-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was thrown from a car during a crash Sunday evening.

Louisiana State Police said the single-vehicle crash happened on US 61 (Airline Highway) near LA 427 (Perkins Road) in Prairieville shortly after 8 p.m. Troopers said the unidentified child suffered life-threatening injuries.

According to investigators, a 2013 Mercedes GLK350 driven by Jonqualya Benton, 18, of Prairieville, was headed north on Airline when the car went off the road, went into a ditch, hit a driveway and flipped. LSP reported excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash.

Troopers said it has not been determined whether the toddler was properly restrained. They added it remains unknown if Benton was impaired.

A sample of her blood was taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
