Roc Day celebrates fiber art

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Transforming wool into beautiful garments and household items is a time honored tradition that is making a comeback among younger generations.

Roc Day 2014 was held Saturday at the Mississippi Craft Center.

Weavers, spinners, knitters and fiber workers put on demonstrations.

You could also buy clothing, like unique hats and scarves to alpaca throws, rugs and pillows.

Organizers say the craft is growing popular among college students and young adults.

Ninety four participants from Mississippi and Louisiana attended Roc Day.

"You're supporting your local artist, but it's also always a one of a kind garment that you can't get anywhere else because if you buy it at a store it's mass produced and usually from China," Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild president Donna Peyton.

The event was hosted by the Chimneyville Weavers and Spinners Guild.
