ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - People are showing an outpouring of love for an Ascension Parish Sheriff's Deputy who is in the hospital fighting severe double pneumonia.

Deputies, friends and even strangers rolled up their sleeves this week to donate blood in Deputy Dennis "Dino" Melancon's name.

He is the fleet maintenance manager for the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office. His best friend, Colonel Bobby Webre, says Dino came down with the infection in his lungs a couple of weeks before Christmas and has been in the hospital since.

"It's been a rough 24 days on him and his family. We think he may be turning a corner, the Sheriff and [I] went and visited him this morning and they performed a tracheotomy yesterday and it seemed to be helping him breathe," said Webre.

Colonel Webre says Deputy Dino doesn't need a lot of blood, but the Sheriff's employees are giving back to the blood bank anyway to support Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.

Dino is expected to make a full recovery.
