MARRERO, LA (WAFB) -

Jefferson Parish deputies are investigating the parish's first murder of 2014, and deputies say the victim was an active member of the military and was on leave.

According to deputies, the shooting happened just before 10 p.m. New Year's Day in the 6100 block of Ray Street in Marrero, LA. Marrero is about eight miles south of New Orleans.

According to reports, 33-year-old Joseph Anderson was dropping his three children off at his in-laws' home. As he was leaving the house, his in-laws said they heard a loud pop and thought it was fireworks. A few minutes later, someone knocked on the door to tell them that a man was lying in the front yard.

It was then that the family discovered that Anderson had been shot. He died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

The victim's green 2001 Toyota 4-Runner was also stolen, but was later recovered Thursday morning in the Lincolnshire subdivision in Marrero.

Anyone with information that can help detectives, call Crime Stoppers at 504-222-1111.
