BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police are investigating a late night brawl they said eventually led to shots being fired and one man with life-threatening injuries.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said the incident happened on Convention Street between 12th and 13th streets around 8 p.m. on New Year's Day.
According to the probable cause report, 40-year-old Kimberly Dean, "who was intoxicated from alcohol" called her two adult children to come help her fight because some people were "jumping her." Police say 22-year-old James Dean and 21-year-old Devin Dean came willingly to their mother's aid.
When James and Devin arrived, their mother got into the vehicle and drove around the corner to Convention Street. Reports say the three got out of the vehicle and "aggressively approached numerous people" that were standing outside of a house.
Officers reported the fight escalated into the street and shots rang out. Police say James Dean armed himself with a tire iron and struck at least one person with it. When shots were fired, James and his sister Devin got back into the car and left the scene.
They added one man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the man was knocked unconscious and sustained fractures to the head and face. He was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.
"It's domestic in nature. It's all family members involved and prior to our arrival, everyone involved in this altercation fled the scene," said Cpl. L'Jean McKneally with the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Kimberly R. Dean, 40, was booked Wednesday and charged with rioting, inciting a riot, and aggravated second degree battery. Her son, James Dean, 22, and daughter Devin Dean, 21, are charged with rioting.
Police booking reports that Kimberly Dean has been arrested 17 times prior to this arrest with charges including aggravated battery, issuing worthless checks, unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, simple battery, forgery, felony theft and second degree battery.
She has also been convicted of simple battery and simple criminal damage to property.
The latest arrest with police happened two weeks ago where a victim told police he was stabbed by Dean at her mother's house; this after he admitted to hitting her in the face with a glass after she punched him for pulling her wig off of her head.
The victim's name from the Convention Street 'riot' has not yet been released. Another arrest is expected in this case.
