Chalmette woman dead in early-morning hit-and-run

CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) - A woman found dead on the side of the road early this morning is the victim of a hit-and-run.

According to police, a 54-year-old woman was found dead on the shoulder of West St. Bernard Highway at about 5:30 a.m. The victim was found by a passing bicyclist.

Police found debris from the vehicle that struck her and believe the incident happened after midnight, possibly in foggy conditions according to officials.

State Police Troop B and St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's deputies were on the scene after the woman was found and shut down west-bound lanes of West St. Bernard Highway for several blocks near the scene. The lanes have since been re-opened.
