BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Police are looking for a man who robbed a convenience store by taking the cash drawer with him after smashing the register to get it opened.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said the robbery happened at the Chevron located on the corner of Government and St. Ferdinand streets around 5:30 p.m.

Detectives said the suspect walked up to the front counter demanding money. They added his hand was inside a green book bag as though he had a gun, but the clerk did not actually see a weapon.

Investigators said instead of handing over the cash, the store employee quickly closed and locked the register. They said the worker then threw the keys away from the suspect.

According to police, the suspect was undeterred by the bold move. They said he grabbed the cash register and smashed it on the ground until it opened. He then took the entire cash drawer and ran out of the store.

The suspect was described as 5'6" to 5'8" and was last seen riding a mountain bike with a rear bag rack. He was wearing a green coat, blue jeans and a dark-colored beanie hat.

It is unknown how much money he got away with.

Anyone with information that can help police with their investigation is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-7867.
