Det. Steven Nethken with GPD said an officer patrolling near the Eastbank Shopping Center was flagged down by two of the restaurant's employees. The workers reportedly told the officer there had just been a shooting inside the restaurant. Responding officers found the three victims outside the restaurant.
However, officers reported neither the three gunshot victims nor the two people who flagged them down would give details about what happened, except "alluding" to a fight getting out of hand. While investigating, they determined three more people had locked themselves inside the restaurant.
Police said after several hours of negotiating, the suspects peacefully walked out of the restaurant. They added a search of the restaurant turned up a stolen .357 pistol, which is believed to be the gun used in the shooting.
Investigators said they believe a fight involving the eight people got out of hand and shots were fired. They said six of those taken into custody claimed to be workers at the restaurant. Police think the other two people were customers. They also said all of the suspects were illegal immigrants, one of which had been previously deported. Additional charges are pending against the suspects from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Gonzales Police Department said ICE, US Customs and Border Protection, Louisiana State Police and the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office assisted in the arrests.
