FRANKLINTON, LA (WVUE) - A man set his own home on fire with the body of his dead mother inside after shooting a neighbor and a police officer Thursday night, according to officials.
The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office said one of the victims was returning home on 16th Avenue near Lenora in Franklinton when his neighbor approached him and demanded money. The victim said he did not have any money on him and was shot in the arm. He is currently in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspected shooter then returned to his home and barricaded himself inside. According to reports, he shot at one of the officers, but was only hit in the arm thanks to his flak jacket. A spokesman with the sheriff's office said the bullet-proof vest likely saved the officer's life.
Police said the man then set fire to his own home before eventually surrendering. After the fire was put out, authorities said the body of the suspect's dead mother was found inside the burned home.
The suspect was treated for injuries at the River Parish Hospital and then booked into the Washington Parish Jail.
Officials have not released any names.
The Franklinton Police Department is handling the case.
