43,000-square-foot renovation project underway at Wells ISD

WELLS, TX (KTRE) -

A $5.5 million construction and renovation project is in the works at Wells Independent School District after the district discovered some of their buildings were not compliant with state regulations.

Dale Morton, the superintendent for the district, says most of the buildings were at least 80 years old. He says they were not up to current standards for fire safety and student security.

The construction project will include 43,000 square feet of new and renovated facilities, including a competition gym, administrative offices and 150-to-175 parking spaces.

Morton says construction was completed last summer on a 5,000-square-foot Agriculture facility that has class room space, office space, a large shop area and a 1,500-square-foot storage area.

Construction is expected to be completed by June 2014. Morton says $2 million of the project was paid for through saved funds over a 15-year time frame and $3.5 million was donated from voter bonds.

"It's really important to us to be able to not build elaborate facilities but to build facilities that are conservative for the community and yet, meet our needs," Morton said.

They will also have a single entry into their campuses to meet standards for student safety.

Wells ISD has about 300-310 students.
