National Guardsmen bring toys to kids far from home during holidays

Posted: Updated:

Members of the National Guard in Springfield wanted to make sure kids far from home during the holidays felt the spirit of the season.

Guardsmen with the Massachusetts National Guard's 126th Support Battalion arrived at the Ronald McDonald house in Springfield with toys and a special guest.

Nearly two dozen soldiers along with Santa Claus belted out Christmas tunes as they marched nearly five miles from the Armory.

There are more than a dozen children living in the house right now from all over the world.

The kids weren't the only ones receiving gifts - their parents and staff were given presents as well.

This is the first year the battalion has done this, but it won't be the last.

"It was absolutely amazing coming down the road. We seen all the kids out there and it was just the smiles on their face and this was kind of the whole point of doing this was bringing some cheer," said Sfc. Sean Connor of the 126th Brigade Support Battalion.

The soldiers say they know what it is like to be so far from home, especially during the holidays, and that is why they chose the Ronald McDonald house.

Staff at the house say it is a wonderful and touching event.
