BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A six acre site located on Government Street will become a new hub in Mid City Baton Rouge, thanks to a donation from Entergy and a grant from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
"This property's rich history can be traced back to the late 1800s," a representative for Entergy said during the board meeting. "In addition to being the former home of the city's first electric railway service, it also served as the home of the Baton Rouge Electric Company in the early 1900s."
Today, board members unanimously voted to allow the Redevelopment Authority use of the land. In addition, the board allowed the RDA access to a $200,000 grant provided by DEQ.
The property will be remediated and redeveloped to serve as a mixed-use development. Officials say "the project could contain green space, promote walking and biking, as well as serve as a possible site for future passenger rail station."
Officials did not say when the remediation project is set to begin.
