Investigators looking for person who set cars on fire in Murfreesboro

Posted: Updated:

Fire officials in Murfreesboro say someone intentionally set two cars on fire and they need help tracking down who's responsible.

The cars, a 1991 Buick Roadmaster Estate and a 1997 Acura TL, were found engulfed in flames in a driveway on the 2400 block of Windemere Drive around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews were able to put the fire out before it damaged the home, and officials found a fuel can between the vehicles.

Witnesses say they saw a person nearby when the fire ignited and reported seeing that same person flee the scene.

"A woman had stopped and said she saw a guy at the end of our driveway light the stream of gas, and it ran up the driveway and blew up and a huge fireball went up and both cars exploded," said the cars' owner, Cindy Russell.

Russell says she had just bought the Acura weeks ago for her son. And she had proudly paid the last note

for the Buick station wagon, where she had stored some of her family's Christmas gifts.

Fortunately for the Russells, their neighbors have stepped in to help.

"We had a neighbor that came up today and loaned us a car and gave us a card with $50 in it. It was so sweet," Russell said.

And Russell wants justice to be served against whoever did this.

"I can't comprehend doing something like this. Who thinks of this and actually does it?" she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-893-STOP (7867).
