8 fire departments respond to fire at Mt. Pleasant factory

Big Tex Trailers was heavily damaged in an overnight fire in Mt. Pleasant. The fire was fueled by paint and other materials.

Crews from numerous fire departments as well as EMS responded to the fire around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters battled the blaze until 2 a.m., according to authorities. There was extensive damage to the building, but no injuries were reported.

"First thing you want to try to do is find out what kind of materials are in that area before you start sending people in. You get something of that magnitude, its going to be a long drawn out affair," says Mount Pleasant firefighter Otis Clark, who was on the scene for 3 hours.

Company officials say only one production line was affected by the fire. Around 370 employees will be affected by the fire, losing a few days of owrk because of the fire.

48 firefighters from Mt. Pleasant, Talco, Cookville, Winfield, Nortex, Tri-Lakes, 5-Star and Sugar Hill helped extinguish the fire, using 13 fire trucks.

"The amount of fire that was originally showing, and size and materials on scene with paint booths and stuff it was necessary to call in some extra personnel to contain it. We called back all our on duty or off duty personnel, and got them back due to the square footage of the building," Clark said.

The State Fire Marshal is assisting in determining the cause of the fire, which has not been determined at this time.
