Mom faces charges after realtor finds small children alone in house

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A woman is facing cruelty charges after she allegedly left her three small children alone in an abandoned home Tuesday.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said Danielle Richard, 21, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on three counts of cruelty to a juvenile. Her bond was set at $7,500.

According to the probable cause report, a realtor found the children in a vacant home on Mollylea Drive in the Sherwood Forest area and called police. Responding officers said they discovered a 2-month-old, 1-year-old and 6-year-old in a bedroom.

The report stated the baby was lying face down on the carpet and screaming. It added the infant was only wearing a shirt and an "extremely soiled diaper." Investigators reported the toddler was sitting on the floor and crying. They said it was also only wearing a shirt and a soiled diaper.

The 6-year-old reportedly told authorities, "he and his siblings had been in the house for a long time, waiting for their mommy to bring them some food." Police said he added that his mother had returned to the house once to change the baby's diaper and then left again.

According to officers, Richard arrived at the house and told police she was the children's aunt. They said she later admitted she is their mother.
