HOUMA, LA (WAFB) - A 36-year-old man was arrested for DWI while he was driving home from drug court. Additionally, he was charged with child endangerment because his 8-year-old was in the vehicle at the time of his arrest.
"She was very frightened and was crying," Chief Todd Duplantis, Houma Police Department, said referencing the young girl.
Police were initially contacted on Tuesday, Dec. 17 shortly after 9:00 p.m. A witness called police after witnessing a "male suspect stumbling and falling asleep inside the store." The man then got in his vehicle and drove off, so the witness called police.
Officers located the vehicle described to them by the witness. They initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Robert Joseph Kieff, Jr. of Galliano, La.
"Upon contact with Mr. Kieff, officers noticed he appeared to be intoxicated as he was stumbling backwards and falling asleep while talking," Chief Duplantis said. "Officers believe he was under the influence of some sort of narcotic."
Kieff, who has prior arrests for drug charges, admitted to the investigating officer that he was on his way home from drug court.
Kieff was arrested and booked in the Terrebonne Parish Jail. His vehicle and child were released to a family member.
