Boy brings loaded gun to St. Joseph elementary school

The St. Joseph School District said a student at one of their elementary schools brought a loaded weapon to school Tuesday.

School officials, police and most parents are relieved no one was hurt after a 7-year-old boy walked through the front door of Lindbergh Elementary, located at 2812 St. Joseph Ave., with a loaded handgun.

The director of student services for St. Joseph Public Schools insists no one was in any danger and this was not a case of the second-grader bringing a gun to school to shoot someone.

"There was no threat whatsoever to any student or staff member. Obviously with the student's age, it seemed to be an incident of basically a show and tell-type incident," Jake Long said.

Long says a teacher noticed the weapon during classroom instruction in the morning and took it away from the child. A school resource officer was informed and police were called. The school went on lockdown for about an hour until police had the boy and the weapon in custody.

"Right now the detective are still working on exactly who it belonged to. Right now they're speaking to the child's mother and father about the child's accessibility to a weapon," said Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department.

Police ended up arresting the boy's 27-year-old father, James Mueller, on an unrelated matter. Officials said he had an active warrant on a non-violent case. The following day Mueller was charged with illegal possession of a firearm.

His son could also face charges.

"The detective assigned to this case will work closely with the juvenile division and will determine the proper course of action to take with regards to this child," Wilson said.

Administrators at the school are looking at improving security.

"We will be extra vigilant through the days that are coming up," Long said.

Police said the child was not arrested and he is in the custody of his mother. It's unclear if he'll be in school Wednesday.

The school district is also urging parents to regularly check their child's backpack to make sure they are bringing to school only items that belong there.
