BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Closing arguments began Thursday morning in the trial of a man accused of killing a Southern football player in 2012. Now the jury is deliberating his fate.

Silas Gibbs was found shot and killed in March of 2012 inside a car on I-110 and Chippewa.

Fort's attorney says he will show that Fort's actions that night were justifiable.

Walter Fort, 23, faces charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon in the shooting death of Silas Gibbs, 24.

The Baton Rouge Police Department it is believed the two men were riding together in a car when Gibbs was shot.

According to investigators, the shooting happened on I-110 near the Chippewa Street exit on March 3, 2012. Gibbs was found dead in the passenger seat of the car.

Two days later, officers arrested Fort in Houston. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after being extradited back to Baton Rouge.

Gibbs was a former running back for Clinton High School and Southern University.

"This case has been a long time coming to trial but glad to finally be here," says Fort's attorney Tommy Dimico. "I think it's going to be obvious to the jury once you hear the evidence that the actions taken by Mr Fort were justified."

East Baton Rouge parish district attorney Hillar Moore, III says the case is solid and he's ready to get it going. "The defendant is presumed innocent and we're prepared to move forward with the evidence we have and we will just let the jury decide," says Moore.

"Well I think the evidence is going to clearly show there was an incident, so that's not a surprise to anyone. But as the law, as people know, well with regard to the law, sometimes it's not who may have done it but why the action was taken," countered Dimico.
