BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said 99 parents were arrested this week because their school-age children have excessive unexcused absences.
Officials in East Baton Rouge Parish said parents were issued summonses on charges of improper supervision of a minor during a two-day truancy roundup. They said in some cases, both parents were charged.
The Baton Rouge Police Department, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office and Baton Rouge Constable's Office took to the streets to follow up on 148 truancy cases reported by the Family Youth Service Center.
The law enforcement officers also checked to see if the parents had outstanding warrants, which resulted in some of them being booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Investigators reported 49 cases remain open, so additional arrests are possible.
