SATSUMA, LA (WAFB) - Police said a man is fighting for his life after getting hit by at least one vehicle along I-12 early Tuesday morning.
The Walker Police Department reported the crash happened on I-12 East just west of the Satsuma exit around 3:30 a.m.
Investigators said the victim is listed in critical condition after he was hit by an SUV.
The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Chad Wayne Cox of Covington, LA. Walker Police say Cox was in the left lane of the eastbound lanes when he was hit.
The driver of the SUV who hit Cox said he was traveling east at the 19 mile marker in the left lane behind an 18 wheeler, when the 18-wheeler suddenly swerved to avoid Cox.
Captain Sharp with the Walker Police Department said the driver of the SUV tried to swerve to miss Cox, but was unable to do so. "There are no indications that speed, driver inattentiveness or driver impairment were factors in the accident. Given the circumstances, including the weather conditions and poor lighting, it appears the accident was unavoidable," said Sharp.
A blood sample was taken from Cox for alcohol and drug testing, which is routine. No charges have been filed in the crash.
There is no word on why Cox was in the road. The investigation is ongoing.
I-12 was closed until about 5:30 a.m.
