PIXLEY, CA (KMPH/CNN) – A mom in California is searching for answers after she says a teacher locked her 5-year-old daughter in a dark classroom.

The mother, Hilda Salazar, says it happened on Tuesday at Pixley Elementary School in Pixley, CA, about 60 miles south of Fresno, CA. She says the teacher unlocked the door when she arrived at the school.

Her daughter was inside the room with lights off crying. Salazar says the teacher said she locked the girl in the room to punish her for not finishing her holiday project on time.

"What if I would have got there 10 minutes late? What if I wasn't there on time? How long would she have been in there," Salazar said.

The school says it is investigating the incident.

The assistant superintendent said, "We want the community to know that we are looking at the hard facts and not perceptions of what occurred. We are advocates for student safety and would never put students in harm's way."

In the meantime, the little girl has been moved to another classroom.

Salazar said she wants the teacher to apologize, and then she wants the teacher fired.
