BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Baton Rouge Zoo officials announced that on of their female giraffes has died.
The 7-year-old giraffe had been treated for an illness over the past several months. Officials state that the cause of death is still unknown because the necropsy results will take two weeks before they become available.
BREC Zoo Director Phil Frost said, "As with every animal death, our staff is deeply saddened by this unexpected loss," he continued," Unfortunately, death is a reality for all living things, and we feel privileged to have had her here at the Baton Rouge Zoo for the time we did."
The giraffe initially came from the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory located in St. Paul, Minnesota. She lived in the Baton Rouge Zoo for five years, and she gave birth to two calves, but neither survived.
Three other giraffes remain in the zoo, all currently on exhibit.
The average life expectancy for a giraffe is reported to be between 20-25 years.
