SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
A Shreveport Police Mounted Patrol Horse is in need of an emergency procedure, and with the help of social media hundreds are chipping in to help raise money.
Rock fractured his leg two weeks ago, and the injury could potentially force him into early retirement. A procedure to place a pin inside of his leg will cost $3000.
"When we found out Rock was injured and needed our help we were more than happy to step in," says Liz Swaine with the Downtown Development Authority.
The Downtown Development Authority and The Shreveport Police Downtown Bicycle and Mounted Support Group have joined forces to start a social media campaign asking for donations.
"Over 8000 views of the post, it's been shared right at 200 times, so it is getting out," says Mike Vansant with the support group.
Rock has been with the Shreveport Police Force for 4 years.
When KSLA News 12 asked Shreveport Police Administrators why they are not fronting the money for the necessary procedure this gave this statement.
"The Police Department is always going to do what is best for its animals. Right now, the department is still reviewing the matter but supports the efforts of the support group," says Sgt. Bill Goodin.
