MARINGOUIN, LA (WAFB) - Authorities said DNA was a key factor that helped them make an arrest in a rape that happened nearly 20 years ago.
The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office reported Bernie Metrejean, 39, of Morgan City, was taken into custody Monday on suspicion of a rape that happened in November 1994. He faces charges of aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping.
Sheriff Brett Stassi said the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab was able to link DNA evidence to Metrejean. According to Stassi, the CODIS hit happened after Metrejean was arrested on drug charges in St. Mary Parish and his DNA was entered into the database.
He added while the arrest took time, he is happy to have caught a suspect.
"They always say justice never sleeps and we want the people to know if it takes 20 years, 30 years, law enforcement will always be there to make the case," Stassi said.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office said it was contacted by IPSO and told about the warrant for Metrejean's arrest.
According to reports, a deputy with SMPSO found Metrejean at a business on LA 182 in Amelia. Metrejean was first booked into the St. Mary Parish Detention Center and then transferred to the Iberville Parish Prison.
