TV show pulled as investigation continues into Wayne Mills shooting death

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Sunday night would have been the grand opening of the Pit and Barrel bar in Nashville. It was set to be the feature of the show Bar Rescue on Spike TV.

Those plans were changed after country music singer Wayne Mills of The Wayne Mills Band was shot and killed by the bar's owner, Chris Ferrell, during an argument early Saturday morning at the bar.

The network decided to pull the episode after receiving pushback from viewers, many who took to Facebook and Twitter asking that the network not give the bar time in the spotlight.

"Bar Rescue - Thank You for pulling tonight's episode and respecting our beloved friend Wayne Mills," one fan wrote on Facebook. "You did the right thing and we are all grateful and forever your devoted fans."

Ferrell, who shot Mills in the head, tells police he did it in self defense. Metro police say they are still investigating the self-defense claims and have not pressed any charges. Ferrell has a valid handgun carry permit.

Mills' friends are in shock that a night of partying turned to tragedy.

"I can't see or understand how it would have gotten to this point," said Michael Scott, who was with Mills and Ferrell before the shooting. "There were no issues. We were all drinking, shaking hands, having fun. I don't know what happened."

Summarizing the night, Scott cautioned to other partygoers, "Drink responsibly and be safe when you're out. Don't let things escalate out of control. There's not need for it."

Mills is managed by Outlaw Music Promotions. He has worked with country music artists like Blake Shelton and Jamey Johnson. He leaves behind a wife, Carol, and a young son, Jack. The Wayne Mills Family Fund has been set up at First Bank for his wife and young son. Donations can be made at any branch or online.
