Winter Weather Advisory issued for much of East Texas; Icy roads possible

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

A blast of winter weather is moving into East Texas, and looks to give way to some slippery roads and maybe even a few power outages. Parts of East Texas are now under a Winter Weather Advisory.

A strong upper level low is moving towards East Texas, bringing with it moisture and cool air. That is spelling what would be a tough Monday morning for commuters in East Texas. The air mass after sunset has begun to cool and it will continue to do so. It will be cold enough to support some frozen precipitation. This includes both sleet and freezing rain. This will continue into Monday morning.

The difference between whether or not sleet or freezing rain falls is a small difference in surface temperatures and temperatures just above the surface. Sleet occurs when precipitation re-freezes just above the surface of the earth while freezing rain occurs when rain freezes upon contact of the earths surface or elevated structures. Most of us in East Texas look to see sleet later Sunday into Monday morning, but some cold rain could also be mixed in with that along with freezing rain.

Because of this threat, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Kaufman, Hunt, Van Zandt, Rains, Hopkins, Delta and Henderson counties until noon Monday. Also for Smith, Gregg, Wood, Upshur, Morris, Titus, Camp, Cass, Morris, Cherokee, Rusk, Panola, Marion and Harrison counties from 4am Monday until noon Monday.

The main threat with this story system is ice accumulating on elevated surfaces, such as overpasses and power lines. According to Larry Krantz with TxDOT, crews will be standing by at 6pm Sunday to head out to treat and sand area roadways that are affected by the weather. Krantz tells us that crews will focus on treating elevated roadways in the area.

As this system continues to move over East Texas, we will be tracking and updating the situation minute by minute. Remember you can track the precipitation from your desktop computer by clicking here. Also if you have not already done so, we encourage you to download the KLTV 7 News and Weather App's for all the latest information including school closings. Also LIKE our facebook and twitter pages to stay up to date with the latest information.

We will have the latest and most up to date information on East Texas News at 10 and again on Good Morning East Texas.
