Arrest made in Cedar Ave. shooting, investigation continues

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge Police have made an arrest in an investigation of a murder that happened around 6:15 a.m. in the 2700 block of Cedar Ave, which is near Chippewa St.

Corey Pittman, 33, was charged for allegedly shooting and killing 35-year-old Kenneth Barton of Jackson, LA.

According to Cpl. Ljean Mckneely, Pittman was arrested during a traffic stop by State Police in St. John Parish. He was brought back to Baton Rouge and will be booked in the EBR Parish Prison on 1st degree murder charges.

McKneely said BRPD received a call around 6:15 a.m. with a person saying that someone was trying to kick in the door to the house. When police arrived, they found blood, but no one in the home.

During a search around the home, Cpl. McKneely said a body was found in a canal about 300 feet from the home.

The investigation revealed that several people forced their way into their home with the intent to rob the people in the home. Police say Barton was shot in the midsection as he fought with one of the robbers.

After being shot, police say Barton ran out of the house and collapsed in a large drainage ditch where he died.

The suspects ran off shortly after the shooting.
