Southeastern Lions return to action at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana men's basketball team returns to action Friday as it makes the short trip to Baton Rouge to take on LSU at 7 p.m. in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Southeastern (2-1) faces the Tigers for the first time since the 2009-10 season and the fourth time under head coach Jim Yarbrough. The previous three meetings came in consecutive seasons starting in the 2007-08 season. Southeastern's lone win over LSU, 89-88, came in the Lions' 1966-67 season opener.

The Lions are coming off a 108-54 victory over Champion Baptist in the 2013-14 home opener and have won their last two games.

Junior transfer JaMichael Hawkins continues to lead Southeastern in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per contest. Devonte Upson, who leads the Lions with seven rebounds per game, is chipping in an average of 10 points to aid the offense. Senior point guard Dre Evans is handing out 5.3 assists per game.

LSU (2-1) has also won its last two contests, both against fellow Southland Conference schools. The Tigers defeated Northwestern State this past Saturday, 88-74, and then knocked off the University of New Orleans, 81-54, Tuesday.

Andre Stringer leads the LSU scoring attack, averaging just over 20 points each time out. Three other Tigers are averaging double-digit points: Johnny O'Bryant (18.3 ppg), Jordan Mickey (13.3 ppg) and Anthony Hickey (10.7 ppg). Hickey is dishing out 5.7 assists per contest while both O'Bryant (12 rpg) and Hickey (11.3 rpg) average double-digit rebounds.

Southeastern returns Tuesday to the University Center to take part in a doubleheader with the Lady Lion basketball team. The Lady Lions host William Carey at 5 p.m. in an exhibition game and the men will square off against Western Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.LionSports.net or by calling the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-LION.
