BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - We applaud the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office in taking swift action to reduce the number of officers guns falling into the hands of criminals. A 9News I-Team investigation recently revealed over the past five years, the sheriff's office has had some 30 guns stolen.
Thieves stole an assortment of firearms from handguns to shotguns to semi-automatic weapons. And, the sheriff's office wasn't alone, as other law enforcement agencies throughout the area also reported having officers' guns stolen.
But, shortly after we contacted the sheriff's office about our report, officials began installing lock boxes in more units and taking other steps to reduce the risk. While Sheriff Sid Gautreaux can't eliminate the problem altogether, he is doing something about it.
Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect the public. They shouldn't have to fear the possibility of facing their own weapon.
