IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - Multiple crashes on I-10 East between Lafayette and Baton Rouge caused major delays and some headaches for drivers Friday morning.

Louisiana State Police reported several crashes happened on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge and troopers are now diverting eastbound traffic to I-49 North in Lafayette.

The right lane has been reopened at mile marker 126 to allow traffic stuck behind the crash to pass.  I-10 East is still closed at the I-10/I-49 junction.  Drivers are being diverted onto I-49 North, then to US-190 East.

Trooper Stephen Hammons said the main crash happened near the Whiskey Bay exit. It involved at least two 18-wheelers and several passenger vehicles. Hammons added traffic is backed up due to a jackknifed tractor trailer.

"Right now, State Police and firefighters are working together to try and get people out of their cars," Hammons said. "We have an Air Med unit transferring people. So far, we're only seeing moderate injuries to the drivers and passengers in the vehicles. We do not know how many will be transported because they are in the process of doing that now."
