CENTERVILLE, LA (WAFB) -

Deputies arrested a woman who reportedly admitted to helping an inmate who walked off his work release job Thursday.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office said Michele Peters, 48, of Gray, is charged on a warrant for assisting escape.

Investigators said she told them she picked up Cletis Viet Vu in Amelia and drove him to New Orleans.

SMPSO said it received a tip around 9:30 a.m. that a work release inmate was planning to leave his job. Deputies said when they arrived at the work site on Degravelle Road in Amelia, they learned Viet Vu had left.

Detectives said through talking to the inmate's known contacts they found out Viet Vu was allegedly at a casino in downtown New Orleans. He was later picked up by Louisiana State Police and taken back to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville.

He faces a charge of simple escape.
