TICKFAW, LA (WAFB) - Three men were taken into custody on burglary and drug charges after they allegedly tried to steal items from the property where a house burned down.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reported James Milton, 36, of Hammond; Christopher Ratliff, 31, of Ponchatoula; and Jared Ross, 27, of Ponchatoula, were arrested Wednesday.
Sheriff Daniel Edwards said a concerned citizen called deputies and reported seeing three men at a home lost to fire that was not being lived in anymore. The home is located on Old Genessee Road near Tickfaw.
Responding deputies reported they saw the suspects standing next to a large boat on the property and took them into custody. Investigators said they believe the suspects were trying to take items left at the property after the fire.
Deputies reported finding several items they think had been taken from the boat and put into a trailer being pulled by the vehicle allegedly being used by the suspects.
Detectives said the property owner was contacted and claimed several other items in the trailer had been in a large barn on the property.
All three suspects were booked into the parish prison on charges of simple burglary (2 counts), possession of CDS II and trespassing. Ratliff and Ross are also held on failure to appear traffic warrants.
Officials did not specify what drugs they found on the suspects.
The investigation is ongoing.
