UK falls to Michigan State in early season Final Four preview

CHICAGO (RNN) – After pulling within two points with 10 seconds left in regulation, the No.1-ranked Kentucky Wildcats lost to the No. 2-ranked Michigan State Spartans 78-74.

The first matchup of the Top 2 teams in the Associated Press rankings was the centerpiece of ESPN's Tipoff Marathon on Tuesday. The game was the earliest meeting of No. 1 vs. No. 2 since 2008. The last 1-2 meeting was a Tennessee victory over Memphis 66-62 on Feb. 24, 2008.

Previously, the earliest meeting of No. 1-No. 2 was No. 1 Indiana defeating No. 2 UCLA 85-64 on Nov. 29, 1975.

The Spartans now go to 2-0, led by senior guard Keith Appling with 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The No. 1-ranked Wildcats (2-1) were led by freshman guard Julius Randle with 27 points and 13 rebounds, scoring 23 of those points in the second half.

Kentucky's next opponent is Robert Morris (2-0) in Lexington on Sunday. Robert Morris defeated UK in the first round of the 2013 NIT 59-57.
