BR shelter preps warm beds before cold snap

St. Vincent de Paul prepares Bishop Ott Shelter for cold St. Vincent de Paul prepares Bishop Ott Shelter for cold
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is getting ready for a larger than usual crowd because of the freeze warning in our area for early Wednesday morning.

Staff spent Tuesday afternoon making extra beds and dressing them with blankets.

The Bishop Ott shelter can house 62 men. Typically, residents who stay there must make a commitment to start rebuilding their lives, but Tuesday night, Director Michael Acaldo says they want to make sure no one is without a place to sleep.

"I think this cold snap is taking everybody by surprise; took us by surprise, so certainly being ready and there to service the emergency needs of the community is a blessing for all of us here at St. Vincent de Paul," said Acaldo.

Acaldo says as long as people show up sober, they will not be turned away.

If you're interested in helping, he says the shelter could use more pillows and blankets.
